USOC names Meissner its athlete of the month
Wednesday, April 26th, 2006The United States Olympic Committee has announced that Kimmie Meissner of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club has been voted the March Athlete of the Month. It is the first time Meissner has won this USOC honor.
Meissner was honored after winning the 2006 International Skating Union World Figure Skating Championship in Calgary. She was the only competitor in the ladies event to land a triple-triple combination in the free skate, and she actually landed two: a triple flip-triple toe and a triple Lutz-triple toe.
Meissner’s technical elements score of 69.47 in the free skate was one of the highest in history and her total score in the free skate was more than four points higher than that achieved at the 2006 Turin Olympics by the gold medalist, Shizuka Arakawa of Japan.

2006 Marshalls International Showcase
Wednesday, April 12th, 2006With a roster that boasted the best in the world, the 2005-06 Olympic season came to a close Tuesday night at the Marshalls U.S. Figure Skating International Showcase in Greenville, S.C. Sixteen skaters gave the crowd of nearly 6,000 at the BI-LO Center a night of exhibition skating they won’t soon forget. Ten Olympic medals and 34 World Championship medals highlighted the accomplishments of the cast, who each skated two exhibitions in this non-judged celebration of excellence.
The music ranged from “Phantom of the Opera” to “Fosse” to Fantasia Barrino, “Tosca” to “Turandot” to Tina Turner. And when you can’t decide, Evan Lysacek played “the last three songs on (his) iPod”—a mix of hip hop, country and Elvis Presley.
World skating title transforms Meissner from princess to queen
Wednesday, April 12th, 2006It was one of those magical moments that changes a life, comparable to a fortunate soul who picks out six numbers at a 7-Eleven and becomes a millionaire overnight. Nothing quite prepares you for what comes next.
Kimmie Meissner went from a promising teenager in women’s figure skating to a world champion March 25.
Boom. The ice princess became a queen.
