Harford County’s Kimmie Meissner was honored for her academic achievements on Tuesday.

At the State Board of Education, Kimmie watched a video of her World Championship performance and signed lots of autographs for her fans.

Meissner was presented with an award for being a class athlete maintaining academic excellence at Fallston High School.

“I work pretty hard in school, so it’s nice to get recognition,” she tells WJZ’s Ron Matz. “I don’t have straight A’s, but I have A’s and B’s. I would say that I am an average student.”

But after meeting Meissner, Matz says it’s easy to see that she is anything but average.

It has been a demanding time for Meissner’s parents and teachers. “The support at Fallston High School is unbelievable,” she says. Yet, it’s a delicate balance for a teenager who will be dancing as a star at her junior prom Saturday night.

“She has worked very hard to keep her grades up. It is not always easy when you’re doing something at the elite level and trying to balance it all; so, she deserves the recognition and I am very proud of her,” says Judy Meissner, Kimmie’s mother.

Despite all the success Meissner has seen on the ice, she’s still decided to continue her education in Harford County. - WJZ Baltimore
