Kimmie chooses University of Delaware for college education
Thursday, December 28th, 2006Olympic figure skater Kimmie Meissner, who has trained at the University of Delaware for some nine years, has decided to attend the school, The (Baltimore) Examiner reported today.
Meissner, 17, from Bel Air, Md., will start off next fall with a part-time course load and hopes to earn a degree in physical therapy, The Examiner said.
“Obviously, I know everything about Delaware, but also because they have sports science program,” Meissner told the newspaper. “And my coach is here.”
Meissner finished sixth in the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy before winning the gold medal at the World Championships in Calgary in March. In November, she took third in the Trophee Eric Bompard in Paris.
Meissner is currently training for the 2007 National Championships, to be held in Spokane, Wash., on Jan. 21-28.

Kimmie will not compete at Grand Prix final

Bel Air’s Kimmie Meissner, who did not skate in Japan, fell to eighth in the Grand Prix standings and will miss the final in St. Petersburg, Russia, later this month.

“Have you seen it? It’s actually pretty cool, but it’s freaky. They’re teenagers and they all have, like, these special powers that they’re all just finding out about it.”
In other words, it’s about her. “No!”
Favorite Color: Gold (as in medals - and the Sabres).
Favorite Takeout: Turkey subs from Subway.
Favorite Song: “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. “I love the Beatles! My Dad got me into them. I listen to them all the time.”
Favorite Doc: Her father, Paul, is a podiatrist. “I know I can always come home and say, “Hey, Dad, look at my feet.” He doesn’t want to look at them. He says they’re gnarly.”
Favorite Pets: Her cats, Ozzie and Misha, and her dogs, Kane, a boxer, and Tucker, a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. A few years ago Tucker ate two of her $1,500 competition outfits.
Reaction to Media Glare: “At first it was hard because I wasn’t used to it at all. It was a big shock to me. Now I like it - I like all the attention.”
