Meissner fourth after short program at Worlds
Friday, March 23rd, 2007South Korean Kim Yu-na shook off her back pain and took the lead in the short program today at the World Figure Skating Championships.
Japan’s Miki Ando was second and European champion Carolina Kostner was third.
The two favorites, defending champion Kimmie Meissner, who trains at the University of Delaware, and local star Mao Asada, were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Meissner, the American champion for the first time this year, was hurt by a low level of difficulty in a layback spin. Although she had a triple-triple, it was not as solid or daring as the leaders.
“The short program is always nerve-racking for me. I like to be ahead but sometimes it is better to come at it like this,” Meissner said. “The long program is definitely my favorite, so I am looking forward to it.”
Last year, she won the worlds with a free skate that included seven triples.
Meissner ready to take on teenage rivals at worlds
Tuesday, March 20th, 2007The last time Kimmie Meissner competed in the World Figure Skating Championships, hardly anybody expected her to win. Herself included.
Now, she’s the skater to beat. She’s got the title and is working through a solid season that includes her first national championship. And if anybody is wondering about pressure, forget it. She has a message for all those other teenagers on the ice looking to steal her thunder: Bring it on.
“We are definitely bringing the competition to everybody else,” Meissner said Tuesday after her first practice. She will start defending her title on Friday. “It’s going to be very exciting and intense.”

Meissner hams it up in new TV spot
Thursday, March 1st, 2007University of Delaware skater Kimmie Meissner is trying hard to be a normal teenager.
The 17-year-old is a senior at Fallston High School in Maryland, fresh off a major test in English. She’s hoping to get her driver’s license this summer, and she even practiced driving in the snow with her father recently.
“When you get your license, my car is going in the garage,” Ron Ludington, the director of UD’s Figure Skating program, told her with a laugh.
There aren’t many teenagers like Meissner, who is preparing to defend her World Figure Skating Championship later this month in Japan. She recently won the Four Continents Championship, which was preceded by her victory in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
